- Anatomy and Asana: Preventing Yoga Injuries by Susi Hately Aldous
- Anatomy of Hatha Yoga by H. David Coulter
Very dry but a great resource to supplement the less technical notes. - Bringing Yoga to Life by Donna Farhi
Brilliant. Reading Donna's book has been inspiring and the most down to earth book on yoga I have come across yet. Humour is definitely a good thing to have. I can really appreciate where she has come from and how she approaches yoga, making it so accessible to absolutely anyone. - Light on Yoga: The Bible to Modern Yoga by BKS Iyenger
Brilliant. A must in any yogi's library. - Jivamukti Yoga by Gannon & Life
I am not sure if I like the preachy nature of this book but I do appreciate where they're coming from. A different perspective, different ideas and it challenged me to think differently about my own practice as a beginner. - The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga by Deepak Chopra
- The Spirit of Yoga by Kathy Phillips
A great introduction to the history from a western perspective. - The Tree of Yoga by BKS Iyenger
This is a great place to start if you're a beginner. It's written in a simplistic and coversational way, and was a joy to read. Great to re-read as well. - Spiritual Survival in the City by Katie Spiers
Samadhi Yoga's founder has brought together the main principles of yoga and how to apply them to your everyday life, focusing on the Patanjali's Eight Limbed Path. Definitely a good book to have in your library. - The Yoga Bible by Christina Brown
Christina runs Life Source in Sydney, Australia and has come up with a great guide to many different postures. The models in the book are yoga teachers from various schools around Sydney. - Yoga Body, Yoga Mind by Cyndi Lee
Cyndi Lee has been practicing yoga since 1978 and runs Om Yoga in New York. I love her simplistic style, non judgemental and peaceful way of teaching. This has been invaluable to me as a beginner! - Yoga as Medicine - The Yogic Prescription for Health and Healing by Yoga Journal
- Yogini - The Power of Women in Yoga by Janice GatesIt's great to see a book on yoga completely from a woman's perspective. It also features three yoga teachers who I have been researching, reading and learning from over the months (via books, DVD, magazines): Shiva Rea, Sharon Gannon and Donna Farhi.

i love checking out what inspires other people, and cyndi lee is my absolute fave yoga teacher/school! I have heaps of her books but haven't checked this dvd out.. should do!
and i teach at yoga warehouse so thumbs up there :)
i'm actually planning a yoga workshop now... if you have any suggestions as to what you'd like to do in one (for stress, for meditation, for inversions etc) i'd love to hear your thoughts!
you must come along :)

Love this post - thanks for the tips, I'll be checking a few of these out.
The Shakti DVD is also my favourite - thanks to you and your generosity! I am yet to get bored with it, the matrix is awesome!
When I come up to Sydney for a visit (hopefully before the end of the year, but who knows) we must go to the warehouse so I can stock up and get a proper yoga mat, etc, so I can feel like a real yoga person!!
Yoga is an area I have yet to venture into but have been thinking that I need to do something to help with the stress as well as to tone and strengthen some core muscle groups. From all that I have read on yours, Stella's and other sites, Yoga could be what I need to find some inner balance.
As a complete beginner I am going to pick your brain and do some searching to see if I can do a workshop to pick up techniques (thanks for that tip) then work on my own.
Thanks for the research :)
Thanks for the post, I will have to check out some of these.
I have "The Spirit of Yoga" book already & "Shakti Yoga" DVD which I love both of!
Hope you feel better
Cheers
thanks for recommending yoga body, yoga mind, sounds like a great beginners book & well worth checking out
